Avenge My Death
Sam Basu

27 September - 3 November 2002

For his new exhibition, Sam Basu presents drawings and objects that seem like the leftovers of UFO abductee debriefings, and video spells that might be used to empower cult followers on mass. He moves from the quantum sci-fi landscape of his last work, to the Eden visions of the desert hermit. He uses objects retrieved from the realms of fantasy, and characters caught in their various searches, to construct his idea of an artist. Several scenes mix together, from the Richard Dreyfuss character's obsession with Devils Tower, in Close Encounters, to a heretical Hieronymus Bosch. Though not being interested in fantasy/sci-fi/religion, as such, he uses these doctrines as platforms for the Eden drawings. This set of work allows in an element of frustration and impending threat but in the end the characters find themselves not fast enough and wanting.
