Luke Gottelier
Kill The Young

20 April - 20 May 2001

Luke Gottelier is known for his photography transforming humble material and jetsam into imaginary landscapes and scenes. An abandoned pot plant, a discarded piece of wood, a couple of safety pins carefully constructed and dramatically lit then shot at ground level. The imagery was a form of documentation of 3-dimensional collage and enthusiastic suspension of disbelief, drawing indifferently on Picasso and Rauschenberg's use of everyday materials. Soon afterwards Gottelier started to make paintings with a similarly casual romanticism where the conspicuousness of the materials gave way to a lyrical artifice. A sofa with a dislodged cushion and a bunch of dates were both imagery he used in his paintings shortlisted in the 1999 Natwest prize.

For his exhibition at One in the Other Gottelier is showing a new series of abstract paintings in a loose geometric loopy style building on the naive properties of his earlier paintings and photographs. Hard edged 60's design takes an unwonted outing with rigorous and painterly technique and are optimistically reconstructed.

He will also be showing a new black and white photographic edition spread over the gallery.
